Today, Aug. 11, we honor the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi – a woman who embraced poverty, humility and joy.

Sister Therese's upbeat disposition, willingness to make fun of herself and positive attitude bring energy to herself and to others.

On Aug. 1, 2025, sisters, affiliates, prayer partners and partners in mission gathered in Mary of the Angels Chapel at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse, to celebrate the anniversary of perpetual adoration. The bell was rung 147 times to honor the past 147 years of perpetual adoration, plus once more to usher in the new year.

This year's Summer Affiliation Gathering wasn't just another meeting; it was a meaningful pause, a space to reflect, reconnect and open hearts to the Spirit.  

As part of the Sisters Speak Out national movement, the group prayed for immigrants, advocated against mass and illegal deportations, and also protested the dismantling of public institutions and environmental protections. But their prayers extended even beyond that.

Ongoing formation is holistic development of mind, body, and spirit, integration of experiences, as well as continual development of personal, professional and ministerial competencies to meet the needs of the world today.

Sister Mildred enrolled as a freshman at the FSPA school in La Crosse for girls interested in religious life, joining twenty-four other girls. Although she was a bit homesick, she made friends and enjoyed the experience.

Before his passing in April, the world was called by Pope Francis to journey this Jubilee Year as pilgrims of hope: “Everyone knows what it is to hope … In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future will bring.”

I serve on the La Crosse County Jail Ministry Board. The compassion and love we all have for people currently in jail encourages us. Our work is to help them in every way we can. We do this in part by supporting our chaplain, Ann Wales, whose compassion and dedication are an inspiration to all.

The sounds of teasing and laughter, the curiosity of books, the rapture of music, the joy of adventure, the embrace of family, the devotion to and intimacy with God: In childhood, Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, born Bertha Elizabeth, was happily wanted and deeply loved.
