The Decolonial Repair Network founders, Eric Anglada and Brenna Cussen, hosted a retreat from July 11-13 at Effigy Mound National Monument in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, focusing on two land-back projects in the Midwest. Among those in attendance was Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Kristin Peters, who joined non-Native allies in ceremonies, discussions and collaborations with indigenous organizers, including Great Plains Action Society.
Reflecting on her experience, Sister Kristin shares, “I woke up to the voice or the call of water and Indigenous people, just to stand in solidarity and more of a stand of reciprocity with them. I realized my life is intertwined with their lives and well-being.” As featured in Indian Country Today.
A few days later, from July 18-20, Sister Kristin joined nine other Catholic sisters from seven congregations, Apache elders and activists in a protest to protect the sacred site from a planned copper mine that would destroy the land central to Apache creation stories and religious practice. Sister Krisitin held a sign reading (see image above), “Nuns Support Apache Religious Freedoms.”
