Sister Katie Mitchell’s Ministry through Cabrini Ministries

Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Katie Mitchell was recently featured on Chicago Catholic: Beyond the Headlines, where she shared the story behind Cabrini Ministries at Holy Name Cathedral, a growing effort at Holy Name Cathedral serving migrant families arriving in Chicago.

Cabrini Ministries began informally in Aug. 2023, when Sister Katie joined the cathedral. She witnessed a lot of immigrant families being bused from Texas to Chicago, in need of pastoral and human needs. She felt called to act. With the support of Father Gregory Sakowitz, Rector of Holy Name Cathedral, a monthly Spanish-speaking Mass was established.

Sister Katie was also featured on Católico Periodico, "The Cabrini Ministry works with migrants in a time of extreme need," where she also shares about her ministry with Cabrini Ministries. She spoke about the challenges families are facing, from legal challenges to healthcare needs.

Named after Mother Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants, Cabrini Ministries now supports families, including food, clothing, job assistance and English classes. Volunteers, especially Spanish-speaking, are needed to help this growing ministry. Donations for food, rent and educational resources are welcome at Holy Name Cathedral. To get involved, contact Sister Katie at kmitchell@holynamecathedral.org.
