As the canonization of Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman advances, many remember her for her strong faith and her talent for uniting people within the Church.
In an article published by EWTN News, Bishop Joseph Kopacz of the Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi, reflects on her impact, saying “her charism, gifts, prophetic voice, charismatic personality, and real strong commitment to the Church — truly being Catholic.”
Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Charlene Smith (right image, pictured left) shares memories of her friendship with Sister Thea. When Sister Charlene served as dean of students at Viterbo University, Sister Thea taught in Viterbo’s English department. Sister Charlene recalls sitting in on her classes, where Sister Thea “would always come bounding in with a song, and she would get everybody into a really good mood.”
Reflecting on their friendship, Sister Charlene shares, “I think one of the greatest gifts, graces, in my life was my friendship with her. She was very kind to me, and she was very kind to all the people that she met.”
