Loyola Marymount University Professor Michael Howard hosted an online discussion focusing on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration and Servant of God Thea Bowman. The event highlighted the ways these two prophetic figures intersect in their commitment to justice, unity and faith, reflecting the essence of Jesus’ prayer for all believers: “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one.”
Professor Howard was joined by two guest speakers. Adjunct Professor Darnise Martin, PhD, spoke about Dr. King’s lasting impact and his role as a modern-day prophet. Sister Laura Nettles, PhD (Cand.), shared the story of Sister Thea Bowman, highlighting her dedication to advocating for African Americans within the Catholic Church.
This discussion was part of a broader effort by Professor Howard, who has worked closely with FSPA Archives and created and taught a course, "Living the Gospels with Rev. Dr. King and Dr. Sr. Thea" which was offered in February 2024 at Loyola Marymount University as part of their Certificate Program in Contemporary Black Catholic Spirituality.
