Sister Hyacinth Maslowski's Story & Gallery

Sister Hyacinth Maslowski painting and portrait

Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Hyacinth Maslowski was born in 1895 and grew up in Ashland, Wisconsin. She was born the eighth of twelve children and recalled an interest in art early on. She entered the St. Rose Convent on July 6, 1915. She made her first profession of vows on June 2, 1919, and her final profession on June 2, 1925.

Sister Hyacinth taught in parochial schools and elementary schools in Wisconsin and Iowa for 38 years. She eventually became a full-time artist, focusing primarily on oil and watercolor paintings. For 15 years, she lived and worked at the St. Rose Convent art department and in Superior, Wisconsin, painting and teaching private art lessons. The subjects of her paintings ranged from still lifes and landscapes to florals and abstract work. After retiring to Villa St. Joseph in 1972, she continued painting and exhibiting work. She is remembered as, “happiest when painting in her studio and having a unique ability to entertain others with imaginative and fanciful stories, a talent which resulted in colorful paintings, especially floral designs, many of which have decorated the walls at Marywood." Sister Hyacinth also loved music and was an accomplished violinist. After 67 years of religious profession, she passed away in 1986.
