Sister Caroline Lally's Story & Gallery
Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Caroline Lally was born in 1923 and grew up in Superior, Wisconsin. She was the second of nine children. Sister Caroline entered novitiate in 1941, made her profession of vows in 1943, and made her final profession in 1949. Sister Caroline earned an Bachelor’s in Education from Viterbo College, La Crosse, Wisconsin and a Master’s in Education from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
From 1942 to 1978, Sister Caroline taught in grade schools in California, Guam, Iowa, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin. From 1979 to 1988, she worked in parishes in Washington and Montana as Director of Religious Education and in parish ministry. She had a lifelong love of the arts and began taking art classes while in Spokane, Washington. Many of her paintings are landscapes depicting the mountains and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. She signs many of her paintings by her nickname, “Bug”.
Sister Caroline taught Art Education in Palo Alto, California, from 1990 until retiring 1993 due to a heart condition. In 1995, she moved back to St. Rose Convent and then to Villa St. Joseph in 2001. After 59 years of religious profession, she passed away at Villa St. Joseph at the age of 78.
