"On our way to solidarity and peace" post election

11/10/2020 12:52 pm

Throughout this historic presidential election in the United States, we have prayed for democracy, unity and peaceful progress into a future of diversity, equity and integrity for all.

Our democratic rights have now been honored. Our voices have been heard. And red or blue, we must continue to carry forth our commitment to care for all creation in Jesus Christ’s Kingdom on Earth.

In his victory speech, President-elect Joe Biden, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris standing off to the side of the stage, echoed the words of the hymn “On Eagle’s Wings.” He urged us to “embark on the work that God and history have called us to do with full hearts and steady hands, with faith in America and in each other, with love of country, a thirst for justice. Let us be the nation that we know we can be. A nation united, a nation strengthened, a nation healed.”

Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration share this call to compassionate action and invite you to reach across the aisle with us through “Listening & Loving Through the Political Storm” — a series of virtual listening sessions offered by the Franciscan Spirituality Center. The last offering in the series, “Post-Election Listening Session,” will be held Nov. 11 via Zoom video conferencing. For more information, visit fscenter.org or call 608-791-5295.

And we share this prayer by Sharon Seyfarth Garner to carry with us on our way to solidarity and peace.

Heal Our Way Forward

God of red and blue states
God of purple people,
Hear our prayers.
After the election
Some will rejoice.
Let them not gloat.
After the election,
Some will grieve.
Let them not despair.
Heal our way forward.
Soften our hardened hearts,
Inspire us to be just, kind and humble.
May we have eyes to see,
ears to hear and
hearts to hope.
Amen.
