Natural Funeral and Burial

As Franciscans we recognize the beauty and oneness of all creation knowing that all we do affects everyone and everything. Natural burial is a way to honor the sacredness of our Sister Earth as well as the natural cycle of life and death.

Our sisters have the opportunity to choose a natural burial. Those who choose this option will be buried on FSPA Farmland at St. Joseph Ridge, La Crosse, Wisconsin, in a designated cemetery site currently undergoing restoration to native prairie grasses and flowers. To help sisters discern this option and share information with their families we created Natural Burial: An option for FSPA, an informational brochure which includes links to additional resources for individuals interested in natural burial. These resources include:

Caring for the Dead: Your Final Act of Love, by Lisa Carlson (available on Amazon) and Green Burial Council.

Sister Lucy Slinger talked with the La Crosse Tribune about FSPA's natural funeral and burial efforts. We have a natural burial article in our Perspectives magazine (see page 9). For more information regarding FSPA's natural burial option contact Sister Sharon Berger.
