History books and photo of Grace McDonald, FSPAFSPA publishes A Chapter of Franciscan History, 1949-1989

Picking up where Sister Mileta Ludwig left off, FSPA has published the second volume of the congregation’s history, co-authored by Sisters Grace McDonald and Celesta Day.

Sister Celesta presented the history book to the leadership team, the sisters at Villa St. Joseph and at St. Rose Convent. For all three presentations she displayed a photo of Sister Grace.

“This is your story,” Sister Celesta said to the St. Rose and Villa sisters. “Never could it have been written without all the work you have done.” She continued, “It is a very admirable story. I was so proud to be part of this group. Reading and writing some of this really tells a wonderful story of which we can be proud.”

Photos taken at Sister Celesta Day's history book presentationsDuring the presentation at St. Rose, Sister Jolyce Greteman thanked Sister Celesta for finishing the book after Sister Grace was no longer able. Sister Margaret Wagner also noted an exchange between Sister Grace and Mother Rosemae Pender, Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist foundress: “Sister Grace was very concerned about writing the FSE history. When Mother Rosemae came to St. Rose for a visit, Sister Grace offered her the opportunity to read the draft. Mother Rosemae accepted and when asked for her reaction replied, ‘I wouldn’t change a word.’?”

Sister Celesta presented copies of the history book to both the St. Rose and Villa libraries. Books were later distributed to one member of each FSPA local community (for distribution and possible discussion among members) and to FSPA friends, including sponsored ministries.

“I call this second volume, It’s a wonderful life,” said Sister Celesta. “I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to do as a congregation. Congratulations on all the goodness that’s documented in this book.”
