New book reveals power of music

For years, Sister Malinda Gerke, a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, has played her harp in hospital halls and patient rooms of local health care facilities. She has used her instrument to soothe those seeking healing, comfort and consolation and, in doing so, has witnessed physical and emotional healing connected directly to her music.

Some of those stories border on miraculous; all are inspiring. And now, all are available in Sister Gerke’s new book, Instrument of Peace.

Published by Whitehall Publishing and illustrated by artist Donna Gerke-Cuta, the 77-page book recounts the stories of more than a dozen individuals and families who found healing through Sister Gerke’s music. “Instrument of Peace” will be available at local retailers as well as through national outlets and includes a companion CD featuring favorite hymns performed by Sister Gerke on the harp.

“The stories in the book are true and touching in many ways,” said Sister Gerke. “I hope readers will not see them as just my stories but as suggestions for possibilities in their own lives. The truth is that we can all become instruments of peace or comfort or healing.”

Books are available at area bookstores including the St. Rose Gift Shop (inside St. Rose Convent) and the Sophia Bookstore (inside the Franciscan Spirituality Center). Books can also be purchased at our partner site, RuahMedia.
