Thea, Joyous Troubadour of God

Sister Maryam Gossling first learned to "write" icons about ten years ago, but it wasn’t until 1998 that she began to seriously work with this sacred art form. Now she has just completed an icon of Sister Thea Bowman.

Using the Eastern Orthodox philosophy of iconography, Sister Maryam has been writing icons of saints and holy people from the traditions of the Western church. She chose Sister Thea as a subject because she was a classmate and "I feel like she is a holy person."

Sister Maryam points out, "Icons are meant to bring to our conscious mind the presence of the person represented, to be a window on the infinite." She notes that icons reflect the glorified body not the physical body.

For this image Sister Maryam used earth tone colors in the background because of Thea’s "earthly beginnings," and blue because it is connected with heaven and the divine. Blue was also a color Thea often wore. According to Sister Maryam the icon is titled Thea, Joyous Troubadour of God, because "Thea’s joy impressed me the most about her."

Greeting cards and posters (11 x 14 inches, not mounted) of the icon are available from Sister Maryam. The cards are $1.00 each and posters are $15.00. Shipping and handling is $3.50 for orders up to $15.00, and $4.50 for orders $16.00 to $30.00.
