Thea Bowman Legacy Update

As readers of Perspectives know, the Thea Bowman Legacy (TBL) office opened July 1, 2000. TBL serves as a clearinghouse for gathering and sharing Thea information. Already Thea has been featured in, or is the subject of, more than twenty books. Currently, five books are being written about our Thea. Charlene Smith, FSPA, TBL Coordinator, continues research and writing a biography of Thea. A TV film depicting Thea’s life is on the drawing boards.

Thea News, a biannual newsletter currently edited by Beth Erickson, debuted March 2002. It briefs Friends of Thea about Thea developments. Six thousand copies of the premier issue were circulated. Subsequent issues are available online at www.fspa.org.

2002 marks the 65th birth anniversary (Dec. 29) of Thea, whom Robert Ellsberg called "one of the great treasures of the American Catholic Church." Memorials and galas will mark the occasion.

Looking ahead, the third annual Thea "Flavor of Soul" Commemoration will be Wednesday, April 2, 2003. For the centerpiece of the occasion famed Thea artist, Michael O’Neill McGrath, OSFS, will present An Evening with Thea, in the Fine Arts Center, Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wis. Spirited gospel music by the Viterbo Concert Choirs under the direction of Daniel Johnson-Wilmot will give a "Thea" musical voice to McGrath.

TBL is interested in your experience of Thea. Tell TBL about developments and Thea events which merit attention. Many donations have been made to the Thea Heritage Collection. The happy Thea and Muhammed Ali photo (Jackson, Miss., 1984) on this page is a recent gift.

Finally, a book with the proposed title: Thea Bowman, FSPA, (1937–1990) by Those Who Knew Her Best is underway. Commentaries will show an "intimate look at a multifaceted Thea." FSPA and friends are invited to submit manuscripts (800–3,500 words) to the TBL office by December 2003. A professional photo should accompany your commentary.
