Sponsorship conference offers spiritual respite

More than 190 people gathered in La Crosse for the sixteenth annual FSPA sponsorship conference on Oct. 14. Those attending include representatives from all of the FSPA sponsored institutions, including three health-care institutions, a university, FSPA spirituality centers, Villa St. Joseph, St. Rose Convent and other special guests. Each year the event combines prayer with dynamic presenters who address spiritual and values-based challenges of contemporary life.

FSPA tour guides, back row, from left: Sisters Helen Keating, Margaret Heil, Lydia Wendl, Fran Browning, Phyllis Hackman, Jolyce Greteman and Dorothy Pieper. Second row, from left, Sisters Marie Weller, Malinda Gerke, Lucile Schettler, Elissa Kamaka, Louise Rahe, Beatrice Merkes and Mary Stadelman. Front row, from left, Sisters Carlene Unser, Rose Frances Phalin, Marie Leon LaCroix, Dolorice Schier, Bernyne Stark and Virginia McCarville.

Joanne Schatzlein, OSF, the featured speaker, provided an in-depth look at the life of St. Clare of Assisi. She indicated that prior to 1982 there was little written about St. Clare, but noted, "New research reveals St. Clare was a dominant, courageous, innovative and incredibly tenacious woman."

The 2005 FSPA Christian Mission Award was presented to the 20 FSPA members who minister as tour guides in Mary of the Angels Chapel. In the award presentation these sisters were referred to as women of the Eucharist, women of prayer, and women of fidelity. As they escort more than 6,000 tourists and pilgrims through the chapels each year they "promote a truly Eucharistic culture-a culture of gratitude and love, joy and peace, self-giving and reverence."

A special award was given this year to Sister Celesta Day, in recognition for her long-term commitment to FSPA mission effectiveness. She was acknowledged with thunderous applause from a room filled with people she has ministered with for the past 15 years. Those who paid tribute to her spoke of her wisdom, compassion and visionary thinking.
