FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF PERPETUAL ADORATION
FSPA Committee Presents: "Teaching Culture through
Laughter"
On Friday, June 20, audience members will be treated to a special lesson in
cultural diversity and racial stereotypes featuring humor, folklore, dance and
rap music. In this one-man show, "Teaching Culture through Laughter,"
speaker Tou Ger Xiong promises an interactive hip-hoppin' cultural experience.
Tou Ger Xiong (Too-Jur-Xhong) was born in Laos in 1973. Xiong's family fled
Laos after the Communist takeover in 1975. They escaped across the border to
a Thai refugee camp. After four years in the camp, Xiong's family immigrated
to the United States as refugees of war. Xiong's childhood in America began
in the public housing projects of St. Paul, Minn. In 1992, Xiong graduated valedictorian
from Humboldt High School. He received a degree in political science form Carleton
College in Northfield, Minn. In 1996, Xiong created Project Respectism, an educational
service project that uses comedy, storytelling and rap music to bridge cultures
and generations.
This event is free and open to the public and it is sponsored by the Justice
and Peace and Integrity in Creation Committee of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual
Adoration.
"Teaching Culture through Laughter" begins at 7:00 p.m. June 20, at
the Viterbo Fine Arts Center in La Crosse, Wis. No pre-registration is required.
A free-will offering will be accepted at the door.
