Sisters celebrate 100 years of life

Sister Orielda Spoden

FSPA celebrated with two of their members who turned 100 in August and September. Sister Orielda Spoden celebrated her first century of life on Aug. 12 at Villa St. Joseph. A Hawthorne tree was planted in her honor on the Villa grounds.

Sister Orielda initially ministered as an elementary teacher. Later she served as a homemaker in convent homes and eventually she headed up the laundry at St. Anthony’s Hospital, St. Rose Convent and Villa St. Joseph. Many current members remember Sister Orielda from the laundry, where she was considered a “no-nonsense boss.” She is also recognized as a life-long learner. Her sweet smile was very evident the day of her party. When she saw her cake, she exclaimed, “It’s got my name on it.” Sister Orielda died on Sept. 18.

Sister Charlene Dernbach

Sister Charlene Dernbach celebrated her centennial year on Sept. 3 at the Villa. A redbud tree was planted near the grotto in her name. A native of Wausau, Wis., Sister Charlene began her ministry as an elementary teacher. She served primarily in Wisconsin schools, and eventually left teaching because of a hearing problem. She moved to Villa St. Joseph in 1958 and filled numerous roles there, including sacristan, organist and dining room coordinator.

Due in part to her hearing loss, Sister Charlene has limited ability to communicate now. Nonetheless, her special day was cause for celebration. About a dozen family members attended the festivities, coming from Kentucky, Missouri and three cities in Wisconsin. They joined many FSPA members in honoring this special woman.
