Members offer insight into their ministries at St. Rose

Members who have taken on congregational ministries since last year were asked
to reflect on their roles.

Atmosphere contributes to a meal as much as seasoning, and if sisters enjoy
the atmosphere in the St. Rose dining room, chances are they have Sister Mary
Becker to thank for it. Sister Mary took on the role of cafeteria manager at
St. Rose in June 2004. She came to St. Rose with experience in hospitality,
cooking, social work, and teaching. She says that gave her skills in organization,
communication, and teamwork that she uses in her current ministry.
Sister Mary says there's one aspect that makes her mission especially fulfilling:
the sisters. "They are why I'm here," she explains. "I just love
these sisters. Just to be able to call them by name and greet them in the morning
brings life to them, and their response does to me."
Sister Mary enjoys her work here, and encourages others who hear the call to
St. Rose to listen. "Five years ago I never would have dreamed that I'd
be here. But I'm so glad I am. Our sisters have given so much to community and
to the church. I think whatever I can do is well deserved."

Sister Shirley Morrissey

Sister Shirley Morrissey
As director of pastoral care, Sister Shirley Morrissey says her primary
duty is to listen, a job she considers "a God-gift." She accepted
the position of director of pastoral care in November of last year, and has
brought to the office compassion for those in need of a listening ear, and a
passion for helping the sisters.
"I really consider it a privilege and an honor to work with the sisters.
They have so many more years of wisdom and they share their life with me, their
stories, their pain and their good points, and it's awesome. It's awesome,"
she says.
Any St. Rose sister who wants to talk with Sister Shirley can stop by her office,
room 232, to make an appointment, or reach her via telephone at extension 242,
and all information and discussions are kept confidential. In the meantime,
Sister Shirley says she hopes to knock on every sister's door at St. Rose, to
see if she can be of any help to individual members, and to let them know she's
ready to listen.
"It is so rewarding just to see how the sisters respond. That's a reward
in itself. I just feel I'm where God wants me to be," she says.
