First Franciscan Fest celebrates Franciscan heritage and spirit
The Franciscan Spirituality Center announces its first Franciscan Fest, a medieval
festival celebrating Franciscan heritage and the spirit of life during the time
of Francis and Clare on Saturday, Sept. 22. Harp music starts the day at Mary
of the Angels Chapel with Sister Malinda Gerke at 9:30. Franciscan scholar and
author Friar Ed Coughlin of St. Bonaventure University will lead a presentation
on Franciscan joy starting at 10:00. The morning will conclude with music from
the St. Rose Schola followed by procession to the Franciscan Village.
The medieval village opens to trumpets and song at noon in the Assisi Courtyard
of Viterbo University. The village features a town square with crafts, vendors
and demonstrations reflecting the time of Francis and Clare. Presentations celebrating
key moments in the life of Francis and the distinctive elements of Franciscan
Spirituality will occur throughout the afternoon. Celtic Cross, Prairie Smoke
and the Viterbo choirs will provide music. In addition to the choirs and bands,
fest-goers will be treated to the sounds of strolling minstrels and singers
as characters from Francis time, all dressed in the clothing of that era,
stroll the village. Italian food will be provided within the village by the
The Market Place restaurant at Franciscan Skemp, Viterbo University Foodservice
and Grounded Specialty Coffee. The fest ends at 4:00 p.m. with a final procession. The entire Coulee Region
community is invited to attend the event. Cost is 1,000 medieval lira or one
U.S. dollar. Tickets can be purchased the day of the festival, or in advance
by calling the Franciscan Spirituality Center. Call 608-791-5295 or e-mail fscenter@fspa.org
